Lester del Rey, the author of The Runaway Robot, wrote many books and short stories during his career. However, some people credit him and his wife, Judy-Lynn del Rey, with doing much more than simply writing stories. They created the modern fantasy genre. Judy-Lynn was a senior editor at a book publishing company. She hired her husband to create a fantasy line of books, and they established Del Rey Books. In addition to writing, Lester discovered fantasy authors such as Terry Brooks and edited their books while his wife promoted their stories.
