Opal forms from water and silica, the main substance found in sand. As water moves through the earth, it collects silica from sandstone. This silica-rich water then flows into cracks in rocks. After the water slowly dries up, the silica is left behind and gradually hardens into a solid over millions of years. As a result, opal often contains a small amount of water trapped inside. There are several types of opal.
