While Butonese culture and architecture are remarkable, they are not what these people are most famous for. Some members of this group are known for their striking blue eyes. This eye color is extremely rare among Indonesia’s ethnic groups, as most people are born with dark brown eyes. Some researchers believe that the Butonese’s blue eyes may have come from their ancestors who had contact with Portuguese explorers.
