　　In 1908, Japan was nearing the end of the Meiji period, which began in 1868. During this era, the country focused on developing industry and centralizing political power. Japan built railroads and factories, reformed its tax system, and changed public education. Another important part of its modernization program was the construction of new prisons. Nara Prison was built during this time as part of the government’s push to modernize the nation.

　　1908 年，日本即將結束始於 1868 年的明治時代。在這個時期裡，該國專注於發展工業和集中政治權力。日本建造鐵路和工廠、改革稅制，並改變了公共教育。現代化計畫的另一個重要部分是建造新的監獄。奈良監獄在這段時期被建造出來，作為政府推動國家現代化的一部分。
