Today, it is estimated that between 100,000 and two million people speak Esperanto as a second language. In addition to the communities found in Europe, there are also speakers in China, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. Every year, hundreds to thousands of Esperanto speakers attend the World Esperanto Congress to practice communicating in their shared language. Some famous figures who have spoken Esperanto include Russian author Leo Tolstoy and English writer J. R. R. Tolkien.
