Fire rainbows are rare because several specific conditions must take place at the same time. The height of the Sun, the type of cloud, and the geographical location all play key roles in their formation. The first important factor is the position of the Sun in the sky. Only when the Sun is 58 degrees or higher above the horizon can a fire rainbow appear. When the Sun reaches this angle, its light passes through the ice crystals in just the right way to produce the colorful effect.
