Most people are familiar with rainbows, but far fewer have heard of a fire rainbow. Despite its name, it isn’t an actual rainbow. A fire rainbow, technically called a circumhorizontal arc, is a rare optical phenomenon. It only occurs under very specific atmospheric conditions, at certain times of day, and within a narrow range of latitudes. The odds of seeing a fire rainbow depend largely on where you live, so don’t be upset if you’ve never encountered one.
