On a dry plateau in southern Peru, the ground is covered with mysterious giant drawings. They have puzzled researchers for nearly a century. These ancient pictures are known as the Nazca Lines. They are so large that they can be seen clearly only from high in the air. For years, travelers and scientists have wondered how and why an ancient culture created such massive works of art in the middle of the desert.
