After the prison was officially closed and marked as a historic site, the government put Hoshino Resorts in charge of its redevelopment. The company first started as a Japanese inn in 1914 in Karuizawa. It now operates over 65 accommodations across Japan and overseas. The company was selected because of its expertise in restoring historic buildings and creating meaningful visitor experiences. Hoshino Resorts plans to turn the former prison into a hotel and the Nara Prison Museum, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
