Between 2012 and 2018, Mike Matthews set up a lemonade stand around New York City so his grandma in Seattle could video chat with strangers. Since she couldn’t travel to New York because of her age, Matthews decided that he would bring New Yorkers to her. The conversations ranged from lighthearted small talk to deeper reflections, with a new discussion prompt posted on Instagram each week. After his grandmother passed away in 2018, Matthews retired the stand. However, as the world grew more and more chaotic, he came to realize that talking with grandmothers could be a powerful source of comfort and peace.
