美國史密松學會的「全球火山計畫」指出，根據推測，海利古比火山自從約1萬2千年前、上一個冰河期結束後的「全新世」以來，就沒有任何噴發活動。
美國密西根理工大學的火山學者卡恩（Simon Carn）表示，海利古比自從全新世噴發後就沒有過任何噴發紀錄。
至於這次火山爆發造成的災情和附近居民的影響，衣索匹亞官方暫時沒有回應。
