Book One opens in 1912, when Francie is first introduced at the age of 11. Her family is extremely poor, and life is full of challenges. Her father, Johnny, is a talented and handsome singing waiter, but he has trouble finding a steady job because of his alcohol addiction. Francie’s mother, Katie, supports the family by cleaning apartment buildings. Due to her family’s poverty, Francie relies on her love of reading to find a temporary escape from the hardships of daily life.
