Chanel is a name known around the world. Today, the brand is a lasting symbol of wealth, status, style, and elegance. However, its founder, Coco Chanel, came from very humble beginnings.
Born in France in 1883 as Gabrielle Chanel, she was one of six children in a poor family. Her mother passed away when Chanel was just 11 or 12 years old. Her father was unable to care for all of the children, so Chanel and her sisters were sent to an orphanage. It was there that she learned to sew—an experience that paved the way for her career.
