Although the Heimlich maneuver is a simple and effective way to save lives, there are a few important things that you should keep in mind. Always ask the person if they are choking and whether they want help. If the person can speak or cough, do not perform the Heimlich maneuver. Instead, encourage them to keep coughing until the foreign object comes out. If the person becomes unconscious, you should use CPR rather than the Heimlich maneuver.
