Despite all of these challenges, Francie makes a new plan for her education. Rather than just skipping high school, she takes summer college-level courses. After a lot of effort, she is accepted into a university. The theme of survival and growth is illustrated through a metaphor—the tree growing outside Francie’s house. At the end of the novel, Francie returns to her old neighborhood and finds that the tree people tried to destroy is still thriving.
