When visiting traditional candy shops in Japan, you may see tiny, brightly colored sugary treats that look like little stars. These bumpy bits of candy are called konpeito. They have been enjoyed by children and adults in Japan for hundreds of years. The word konpeito comes from the Portuguese word confeito, which means sugar candy or sweets. In the early 16th century, Portuguese traders brought sugar-coated sweets with seed centers to Japan.
