For thousands of years, humans have looked to the sky for meaning and inspiration. Ancient people in Mesopotamia began recording what they observed in the sky around 4,000 years ago. After that, Babylonian scholars wrote detailed accounts of how stars and planets move in the night sky. They divided the sky into 12 sections and tracked which planets and stars appeared in each section at different times of the year. Based on their observations, the Babylonians created what we now call the zodiac, which includes 12 signs.
