From a young age, Jacqueline Woodson had a passion for writing and telling stories. She loved making up unbelievable tales for her friends just to see if they would believe her. Much of her inspiration comes from her childhood spent between Brooklyn, New York, and South Carolina. Woodson stated that Brooklyn was a diverse neighborhood full of people from all walks of life, while South Carolina gave her a strong sense of family and community.
