Recently, a significant discovery was made in Tanis, a major archaeological site in the northeastern Nile Delta of Egypt. In 2025, a team of French researchers unearthed 225 royal ushabti figurines. The discovery was both unexpected and historically important for the ancient capital.
The figurines were found in layers of silt beside a granite sarcophagus that had previously been discovered without a confirmed owner at the time. Later evidence strongly suggests that the sarcophagus may have belonged to King Shoshenq III. He was one of the most prominent rulers of Egypt’s 22nd Dynasty and was known for his major building projects.
